Fairtrade International – Making Global Trade Fairer

Fairtrade International is a global non-profit organisation working to make international trade fairer for farmers and workers, particularly those who are disadvantaged within global supply chains. The organisation coordinates the international Fairtrade system, develops standards and owns the internationally recognised FAIRTRADE Mark.

A central part of Fairtrade’s work is establishing social, economic and environmental standards for producers, traders and other participants in Fairtrade supply chains. These standards address areas such as sustainable agricultural production, working conditions, workers’ rights and fair trading relationships. Compliance is independently audited, providing the basis for products to be sold under Fairtrade certification.

Fairtrade also uses economic mechanisms designed to strengthen producers. The Fairtrade Minimum Price provides a safety net for many commodities, while the additional Fairtrade Premium gives farmers and workers funds that can be invested in projects chosen by their organisations and communities. The system aims to give producers greater stability and a stronger position in commercial relationships.

Beyond certification, Fairtrade International supports programmes dealing with issues such as climate resilience, human rights, gender equality and sustainable livelihoods. It also works with businesses, governments and civil society and advocates for policies intended to create fairer trading conditions.

The international system connects producer networks with national Fairtrade organisations and businesses that source certified products. Fairtrade International therefore combines standards, certification structures, producer support, advocacy and the FAIRTRADE Mark within a global framework designed to improve conditions for farmers and workers and promote more sustainable and equitable trade.
