NewsBiscuit is a British satire and comedy website built around fictional news stories, topical humour and collaborative comedy writing. Launched by writer and author John O’Farrell in September 2006, the site describes itself as the UK’s original fake news website and publishes new humorous material inspired by current events, politics, popular culture and everyday life.
Much of the content takes the appearance and structure of conventional news reporting but is deliberately fictional and written for comedic effect. The website features satirical headlines, short news pieces, longer features, cartoons and material selected from its archive. Politics is a prominent subject, although the site's humour extends well beyond political stories into entertainment, lifestyle, sport and general topical comedy.
An important part of NewsBiscuit is its community of writers. The Writers’ Room allows aspiring and established comedy writers to share ideas, submit stories and develop their writing. Selected contributions can be published on the main website. NewsBiscuit states that contributors retain copyright to their work.
The site also runs caption competitions and produces a monthly podcast. Collections of stories, headlines and cartoons have been published as books, several of which are available through the website's shop. Merchandise and donations help support the operation of the otherwise free platform.
NewsBiscuit therefore combines a satirical publication with an open comedy-writing community. Visitors can simply read its fictional news and cartoons, while writers can actively participate and potentially have their work selected for publication.
